Windana warmly welcomes you to our first ever online exhibition of the:

‘Art Therapy Community Open Studio Project’ (Open Studio).

Our exhibition presents artworks by members of the Windana Open Studio project based in St Kilda and is generously supported by the City of Port Philip, Community Grants Program. The Open Studio participants originate from both the Windana Community and the local communities of the City of Port Phillip and surrounds.

Open Studio plays a vital role in supporting the artists’ recovery journey through developing alternative forms of expression and connectedness with their own self and community, with powerful symbols and meanings underpinning the work. The Open Studio project represents opportunities for the participants to benefit therapeutically and economically in this process. The custom of using artistic representation to promote therapeutic growth throughout the process of recovery from drug and alcohol problems is central to Windana’s principles.

The artworks presented in the exhibition represent a broad field of creative pieces. They are imagined from the pure enjoyment of creating for fun through to expressing and processing difficult personal experiences that frequently impact on recovery processes for people with problems associated with drug and alcohol use.

In the recent COVID-19 times, the Open Studio group has been nimble in adapting to new ways of engaging with the project via a variety of platforms.  Artists have remained creatively engaged and continued to work on their artworks, fifty-nine of which are presented here in the exhibition.

The Open Studio participants represent diverse backgrounds and histories. We acknowledge and congratulate all of the artists who have the courage, trust, and connectedness to both participate in the Windana Art Therapy Community Open Studio and exhibit their art in the exhibition. We also acknowledge and thank Sandra Hatton – lead Art Therapist on this project, the exhibition is an outstanding achievement for all involved.

Thank you for visiting and enjoy the exhibition.
